GUIDE / TOOL
Pause Before Reaction Tool
A short practice for noticing activation, naming emotion, and choosing the next response deliberately.
Notice activation
What is happening in your body? Tightness, heat, speed, shallow breathing, or the urge to act?
Name the emotion
Use a precise phrase: hurt, fear, anger, disappointment, pressure, or uncertainty.
Identify the impulse
What do you want to do immediately—send, accuse, withdraw, decide, or demand?
Pause
Put space between the feeling and the action. Put down the phone, walk, drink water, or breathe more slowly.
Decide whether to continue
Are you able to listen and speak without making the situation harder? If not, choose a return time.
Choose intentionally
What response matches your values and the information you actually have?
Review
What cue did you notice? What helped? What will you try next time?
A practical next step
If you want to clarify how this applies to your situation, you can begin with a Zero Session.
